Our Home

During late November 2005 we moved into our new home. Since then our families have joined us most weekends to assist in various maintenance and improvements.

Front Garden (old and new). The front garden had been left to fend for itself for a few years, and was looking a little tired. The roots of the main tree were also starting to stick out of the soil in different areas. We decided to start again. The cherry tree was too big to transplant but most of the roses are now happy in the backyard.
Preparing the front yard. After ripping everything out, it was time to plant the weeping cherry (which caused some drama transporting back from Bunnings).
In the beginning... Jo planting the miniature box hedge
Master Bedroom fireplace and mantlepiece. We thought that the paint on the fireplace made the marble look washed-out, so we're in the process of removing it. The wardrobes have also been a necessary addition (we had just finished varnishing them at the time of this photo).
The Dining Room and hallway (panorama).
Kitchen. The glass racks were one of our many additions.
The lounge.
Bathroom. Note the loose tile in the shower. It turned out that the previous owner had not sealed the fittings, and water had eventually rotted the plaster behind. Dad took me through tiling 101, and it now looks great.
The Secret Garden. A glorious cascade of roses from the trellis looked wonderful, but cut out a lot of light. It was time to get up on the roof and have a closer look...
The roof (panorama). Waist-deep roses covered the area of two entire rooms. It was obvious that we had a little trimming to do. Michael Hawke, dad and I spent a few days losing flesh to the thorns before finally bringing the rosebushes under control.
The backyard (old and new). Cutting the roses down has removed some of the color, but the whole backyard is lighter and airier.
